Enable root ssh login in Ubuntu (and derivatives, probably)

  1. Add a password for the root user
sudo su
passwd
  1. Change these options in /etc/ssh/sshd_config
PasswordAuthentication yes
PermitRootLogin yes
UsePAM no

I personally like to have my servers allow remote root login only with public key, so I do

PermitRootLogin without-password
  1. Restart ssh daemon:
service ssh reload

Done!
