thumbnailer generates empty (0 byte) thumbnails for some images

for some images the /media/thumbnail endpoint serves 0 byte thumbnails. so far i've encountered this only with some .png images.

this can be reproduced with e.g. the image from here - i checked both importing the image with /media/upload/import, as well as uploading with /media/upload/full
